Jan’s Story — and Why DolceRight Exists

My name is Jan, and I moved to southern Italy with a dream and a budget.  My husband and I found a property in Puglia we loved. We hired a contractor who quoted us €250,000 — all in. Every feature we wanted: three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a pool, gates, full landscaping. We had it in writing. We signed.

Then things started to go wrong.  The contractor collected payments from us totaling over €100,000 — then disappeared.

The contractor who came in to finish the job charged us what the project actually cost. By the time the house was done, we had spent close to €400,000.

We still don’t have the third bedroom, the pool, the gates, or the landscaping we were promised.  A €250,000 dream became a €400,000 reality — with less than we paid for. 

I don’t tell you this to warn you away from Italy. Italy is extraordinary, and that house — hard-won as it was — is one of the great loves of my life.  I tell you this because it didn’t have to happen. Not if I’d had the right knowledge at the right time.
